Garage Door Opener Won't Respond? Troubleshoot Before You Call
An opener that's gone completely silent is usually one of a handful of causes, and a couple of them you can rule out in five minutes without any tools.
Check the obvious first
Is the opener plugged in? Has a breaker tripped? Garage outlets are notorious for sharing a circuit with something else in the house. If the unit's light doesn't come on at all, start here.
Dead remote batteries vs. a dead opener
Try the wall-mounted button. If that works but the remote doesn't, it's almost always a battery or a remote that's fallen out of sync — not a repair call.
The safety sensors are the usual suspect
Two small sensors sit near the floor on each side of the track. If they're misaligned, dirty, or something's blocking the beam between them, most openers refuse to close the door and some won't respond at all. A blinking light on the opener unit is often it telling you exactly this.
When it's time to call
If the unit hums but the door doesn't move, grinds, or the sensors check out fine and it's still unresponsive, that's a motor, gear, or circuit board issue — worth a diagnostic visit rather than more guessing.
